Re surface sheetrock?

Stripping old cork board off the wall is taking the top layer of the paper off the sheetrock. I will be putting more cork board on that area but think I should attempt to resurface/seal that sheetrock. Can I paint it with a couple coats of oil base primer and if so should I thin the primer for the first coat?
