Cab you paint art on a car?

I have a friend whom is an artist. He does painting and spray-paint art. They are all very beautiful. I am wondering if it would be possible, and what paint he would need to use, and what coating he would need to use, to paint a portrait on the hood of my car. What would he need to do?
